[MCS Special] Web Design Colors – How to Easily Pick a Color Scheme For Your Website (And Get More Staying Power)
June 17th, 2010The choice of color scheme is a critical element in your web design. Although there is no doubt that the actual content of your web site is more important than anything else the design of your web site can have a huge impact on how long your visitors will remain on your site.
It’s not an easy decision though. The fact is that there are a lot of colors to choose from. 16.777.215 to be exact!
Fortunately, there is an easy fix for that! There are 3 basic types of color schemes that I want to introduce in this article. These types of color schemes are complementary, analogous and triadic. There are other types of color schemes, but you will be able to get great results with these 3 types very easily.
These 3 types of color schemes are base on what is called the color wheel. The color wheel is a tool for putting colors together. And it’s basically created by mixing colors, starting with the primary colors. There’s more to it than that, but any Google search with the term “color wheel” will give you tons of hits. The color wheel is not the main subject of this article, but it was necessary to offer a short explanation of what it is, now it’s time to get to the 3 color scheme types.
Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are located opposite to each other on the color wheel. That means you are dealing with colors with a very high contrast. This makes the design of your website very vibrant. If not managed carefully these combinations can be jarring to the eyes. If you want a very vibrant website this is a very good option if managed carefully.
