[MCS Special] Web Design Colors – How to Easily Pick a Color Scheme For Your Website (And Get More Staying Power)

June 17th, 2010

The choice of color scheme is a critical element in your web design. Although there is no doubt that the actual content of your web site is more important than anything else the design of your web site can have a huge impact on how long your visitors will remain on your site.

It’s not an easy decision though. The fact is that there are a lot of colors to choose from. 16.777.215 to be exact!

Fortunately, there is an easy fix for that! There are 3 basic types of color schemes that I want to introduce in this article. These types of color schemes are complementary, analogous and triadic. There are other types of color schemes, but you will be able to get great results with these 3 types very easily.

These 3 types of color schemes are base on what is called the color wheel. The color wheel is a tool for putting colors together. And it’s basically created by mixing colors, starting with the primary colors. There’s more to it than that, but any Google search with the term “color wheel” will give you tons of hits. The color wheel is not the main subject of this article, but it was necessary to offer a short explanation of what it is, now it’s time to get to the 3 color scheme types.

Complementary Colors

Complementary colors are located opposite to each other on the color wheel. That means you are dealing with colors with a very high contrast. This makes the design of your website very vibrant. If not managed carefully these combinations can be jarring to the eyes. If you want a very vibrant website this is a very good option if managed carefully.

[MCS Special] – 7 Tips to Making Your Website Look Great

June 14th, 2010

1. Pick a color scheme that is easy on the eyes.

It’s important that you don’t choose clashing colors on your website. A lot of clashing colors will make the site seem messy and unprofessional. You can use clashing colors to achieve certain goals, but unless you really know what you’re doing I recommend that you don’t

2. Make sure your website has a “Clean And Crisp” look.

A common mistake in web design is to clutter the site with too many elements placed too close together. White space is not necessarily a bad thing in web design. To keep your website as “Crisp and Clean” as possible it is important that every element you are thinking about putting on the site is considered carefully.

3. Use a font that is easy to read on a screen.

Reading text on a screen is very different from reading text on paper. Although new technology, such as the Kindle, is emerging that makes reading text on a screen easier it is still important to use a font that is easy to read on a screen. Arial and Verdana are good fonts to use on a website.

4. Be specific about what you want your websites visitors to do.

How to have a Great Deal on a Unique Web Design

June 7th, 2010

Everyone wants nothing but the best for their own website. But having such a website means a more complex and state of the art customizations and they don’t come cheap.  A unique website oftentimes makes you measure the depth of your pocket. But you might as well have to ask yourself, are you paying the right price? Or does the price justify the quality of your website?

But before that, it is best that you know how websites are priced. There are lots of designers who offer great deals in their services. Such a thing is remarkably an eye-catcher to the clients of the web industry especially for those who are quite pricing conscious. These great deals are often the ones where you get to have relatively the same major features and graphics but increase the usual number of pages or reseller hosting. There are times that upgrades for your website’s basic features are offered by the designers. As always, extra features mean extra cost for the client. But if you’re going to be paying extra, better go for quality rather than quantity. Extra pages are just one of the easy things a designer could do. Better to be sure that the design that you have is worth every penny from your hard earned cash. Yet then, you are not a professional web designer yourself to know all the ins and outs of web designing. This makes you vulnerable to situations where you are not sure about the rates or the exact services that best suit your needs for your website.

All you need to do is to come prepared and conduct a little research. Browsing through the designer’s website by reading some articles on the page will help you get to know the designer a lot better. It is also more likely that you get to know the background of the designer and what kind of web design you could get from him. Even still, it is best that you get to have a talk with the designer himself. By doing so, you get to clarify things regarding their services and what you can possibly get for a particular price. But make sure to give much importance on the features and functions that you want to be applied in your website. Being confused can’t be avoided so it would be good for you to lay down some options and ask the designer how much it will cost you to the said options.

Comparing prices will also be a good aid for you to decide regarding your desired website. It lets you have an outlook on how you would like things to turn out and which designer would be fit your perception and in your pocket. Think things through and think again. Consider all the options and know what’s best for you and your website before making a decision. Decision making is one of the most crucial parts of the process. A change in price is pretty much certain once you get to change your mind during the progress of the project.

An exceptional website design requires advanced graphic designs, more useful functions and a lot of work. Such design also requires a larger budget. But eventually, it is all in the matter of getting the best price with a well designed website.

The 4 Basic Principles Of Good Layout

June 1st, 2010

Proximity, alignment, repetition and contrast are the 4 basic principles of a good layout. These principles apply to any media and are easy to learn. And, even easier to apply!

To avoid confusing matters we are best served by discussing them one at a time.

Using Proximity To Connect The Dots

There’s nothing more infuriating that reading something to the just to find out that if you had looked at that graph all the way down at the bottom everything would have made much more sense. That’s why you need to keep things that are related close together. In terms of layout that is referred to as proximity.

The lesson: keep things that are closely related close together!

Alignment = Ordnung Muss Sein!

Aligning the content of your webpage is a good way to maintain some much needed order. With menus, graphics and so on a webpage easily becomes cluttered. Aligning your content can help make the webpage seem better organized.

The lesson: alignment is a great way to de-clutter your webpage.

As Repetitive As Repetition Seems It Makes Your Reader Feel Safer

Nothing is worse that ending up on a web page you don’t know, unless you went there intentionally. By making sure that key elements of your layout is repeated throughout your entire website you tell your readers that they are still on the same site and that they don’t need to worry. This is incredibly easy to achieve on the Internet with cascading style sheets AKA. CSS.

The lesson: repeat key elements of your layout to tell your readers that they are still on your website.

Contrast

Sometimes you want to make a statement. Draw the readers eye to a certain part of your website. This is where contrast enters the picture. Contrast breaks up the norm and attracts the reader like flies to a pile of … Well, I guess there’s no need to get nasty :-) , but you get the picture.

The lesson: use contrast to demand attention.

There’s a lot more to good web design than these basic principles. However, these principles serve as a great starting point for anyone who is trying to improve the design of their web-site.

Choosing a Killer Domain Name

May 26th, 2010

If you have a baby or know any first time parents, you are aware that picking the baby’s name is not an easy task and can take a lot of time and discussion. You need to get it right as it will stick with your son or daughter for their entire life. That’s why it’s very critical.

To make money with your website is no different; you are going to select a domain name and make it a important decision as your domain name will be around forever..

A lot of marketers underestimate the domain name. However is it the first step that you need to take right if your are expecting success from your online business.

If you don’t know already, the domain is your website’s name; it is your address on the Internet. It’s the “www” you type in your browser to go anywhere online.

A champion domain name influences your website in two ways:

Your Users Curiosity

In order to drive traffic to your website you need to market your domain name on and offline. If it doesn’t catch your target audience attention it means no clicks and no visits. And the worst: no sales.

Google Top Rankings

When somebody enters a keyword on Google to find info online, the search engine access its index to pick the most relevant sites for that keyword. One of the aspects that influence relevance is the domain name.

For example, if you are planning to sell shoes online and your website doesn’t include the keyword “shoes” or similar, it will not be as relevant as it could.

Even if picking a domain name is not as important as for example your website content, it still can have great influence on your results.

Read on to check some tips on choosing your domain name:

The domain name needs to be interesting and memorable in order to catch users’ attention.  Don’t forget on the Internet your competition is only one click away.

The domain name preferably contain a keyword related to your product. This is even more important if your website is brand new.

People should easily recognize what market you are in. This is key to make money online.

Every time go for a “.com” domain as it has more credibility and it is shorter.

Plan to create a massive list of possible domains or you face finding out your “perfect” name already chosen.

Ask friends and family that fit your target audience profile what they think about your choice. You’ll be surprised with some of the feedback you get.

Don’t spend too much money registering your domain name; there are plenty of options out there where you can get it under US$10.

You now have sufficient information on your hands to decide on a powerful domain name, to avoid common errors and launch your online business successfully.

To #Region Or Not To #Region

February 17th, 2009

That truly is the question. A question that has surfaced today when a co-worker started bitching about the 4 layers of embedded regions in the code he was working on. If you’re not familiar with regions here’s a short explanation. In .NET you can surround your code with #Region and #Endregion to make it possible to hide those lines of code. The purpose is to make the code clearer by occupying fewer lines.

Organising Your Thoughts With A Mind Map

February 16th, 2009

When starting a new project one of the first things you need to do is to get your thoughts organised. A mind map is a really powerful tool towards that end. The good news is that I’ve found a really excellent free tool called Mindomo. As with most free software there are some limits to the options you have available to you, but in this case it really is pretty good.

Starting On A High Note

February 15th, 2009

Well, since I don’t expect to be ending anytime soon. As the title of this blog suggests there will be a lot of client side code. Having said that the amount of server side code will be about the same. I don’t like to differentiate the two. However, I can promise you that all code presented on this blog will be web based. This blog has two main purposes.

  1. Keeping track of my coding projects
  2. Entertainment value and possible rants
